The Little Kanawha River in Glenville. The Little Kanawha River is a tributary of the Ohio River, mi ( km) long, [1] in western West Virginia in the United States. Via the Ohio, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 2, mi² (6, km²) [2] on the unglaciated portion of the Allegheny Plateau. About 7 percent of all coal mined in the Nation comes from an area of 5, mi² in the Appalachian Plateaus part of the Kanawha–New River Basin. Production of the mostly low-sulfur coal nearly doubled from to as mining technology advanced, .
The Kanawha River continues to flow northwestward through West Virginia to its confluence with the Ohio River at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, river sdles below Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The basin is bounded on the north by the Muskingum River drainage basin, on the west by the Scioto River basin, and on the south by Raccoon Creek, Leading Creek, and the Shade River drainage basins.
